The Animator Dormitory located in Tokyo was founded by June Suguwara and is operated by the Supporters animators non-profit organisation. The About section of the YouTube channel states that the dorm was created to support new animators due to low salaries in the anime industry. The Animator Dormitory channel and social media accounts share the experiences of animators staying at the dorm, with the former also uploading videos that shed light on how the anime industry works.
The Kickstarter page describes the New Anime Making System Project 2020 (the GoGetFunding page uses the name of New anime creation system project phase 1 for the campaign) as a music video project that sets “a new standard for the anime industry by paying our animators two to four times current industry standards”. A January 2022 production update revealed that the music video’s main animators were paid “approximately” $180 per cut with funds raised in Japan and overseas.
Suguwara has started crowdfunding for a second music video with The New Anime Making System Project Phase 2 campaign, which will feature The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiyait is Aya Hirano as a singer. The the new campaign’s GoGetFunding page says:
In the future, we plan to produce this kind of short animations on a regular basis and, in the near future, to pay our animators with a fixed salary rather than by the piece.
※ We would like to produce these animations at 1 animation per year consistently.
Our goal is to accumulate staff and industry know-how over the next few years while creating our own anime studio that meets the needs of those who create anime.
