At Ashley McBryde’s concept album Ashley McBryde presents: Lindeville is one of my favorite albums of this year.
I love when music tells a relatable story even if it’s told in an absurd way, and I think this album does that perfectly, especially for anyone who grew up in one of those small towns where everyone knew the business of others.
One of my favorite songs from the album is “Bonfire at Tina’s”, which features Caylee Hammack, Brandy Clark and Pillbox Patti.
The song has those classic revenge vibes that make up some of the best female country songs. But what sets this song apart is that it acknowledges that women (especially small town women) are often against each other, but when the going gets tough, they show up to support each other:
“Small town women aren’t made for each other
But you burn one, man, you burn us all
We’ll be here drinking until the smoke clears”
I will say the song itself alludes to the act of revenge more than the music video because if you stray from the lyrics the women just drink at Tina’s house and promise to be there for each other if the one of them falls:
“And when it’s in ashes, we’ll laugh, we’ll get drunk
If we fall on our ass, shit, we’ll get up”
The clip goes one step further by having the women come up with a plan to steal the boy’s car that burned one of them down and having…a literal bonfire at Tina’s house using the car in the center.
We see all the women throwing away their own items like hats, stuffed animals, and a marriage certificate that most likely have sentimental value with the guy who hurt them in the fire.
The song is fun and the music video is honestly quite cathartic to watch.
Gotta love seeing women do property damage for revenge.
