We had the pleasure of interviewing Joshua Radin in Zoom video!

A song tames and calms even the roughest seas. After sixteen years, eight albums and hundreds of shows, Joshua Radin still treats music as an antidote to all evil. The Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter, who sells gold, finds healing between waves of acoustic eloquence and wool-tinted Americana storytelling. On his ninth feature film The ghost and the wall [Nettwerk], the troubadour continues a cycle of catharsis intended to be shared among all receptive hearts.

Since 2004, it has touched countless listeners with palpable transparency. As a result, he has sold over a million records, generated over a billion total streams and won a gold plaque for the single “I’d Prefer Be With You”. Landing north of 150 cinematographic, television and commercial synchronizations, his voice travels with the times. Among many highlights, First Ladies Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden personally selected “Brand New Day” for an advertisement in support of the troops. In addition to memorable performances on Ellen, Tonight’s show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Conan, and Today’s show, he famously serenaded avowed super fan Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi at their wedding. Beyond sold-out shows on four continents, he has also performed alongside Ed Sheeran, Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos, Imogen Heap and The Script. Additionally, he remains a committed philanthropist, supporting charities such as Little Kids Rock and North Shore Animal League America (NSALA), among others.

After his return from a European tour in support of his 2019 album Here and nowJoshua had originally planned to bend over, write and record a new album.

Nevertheless, the circumstances of the global pandemic complicated the plan …

This is where producer Jonathan Wilson [Father John Misty, Conor Oberst, Dawes] come. A 30-minute phone conversation later, Joshua and Jonathan get down to The ghost and the wall remotely. Although they are both located in Southern California, they chose to transfer files back and forth, creating the entire drive via wire. Jonathan laid down the instrumentation in Topanga Canyon and Josh cut the vocals in the Hollywood Hills. In a month, they had completed ten songs.

He paved the way for the album with the single “Better Life”. On a discreet acoustic guitar, singing voices detail the journey of “An immigrant coming to this country and seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time.“ Folk picking and muffled delivery relay the anguish of the search for “the one” on “Make It Easy”.

Then there is “Less ghosts”. A personal favorite, Joshua comes to a revealing achievement cemented by confessional lyrics and soft tones.

Ultimately, Joshua finds a way to heal again on The ghost and the wall.
