DREAM THEATER’S JOHN PETRUCCI Releases Animated Music Video For “Temple Of Circadia” Featuring MIKE PORTNOY
DREAM THEATER guitarist John Petrucci released the official animation music video for their song “Temple of Circadia”. The title is taken from his second solo album, “Terminal Velocity”which was released in August 2020. The LP’s drums were laid down by former DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoywhile Dave LaRue (DIXIE DREG) played bass.
Petrucci discussed his musical reunion with portnoy during a long conversation with the official DREAM THEATER fan club. He said: “Mike play the drums on this [record], which is really great. Obviously, Dave LaRue played on my first solo album, ‘Suspended Animation’and also I shot with [him] several times with ‘G3’like in the past Mike Portnoywe shot with ‘G3’ so — in fact, from the very first ‘G3’ around 2001. But yes, have Mike playing drums on it was cool. It was an awesome experience.”
Talking about how his renewed collaboration with portnoy came about, Petrucci said: “[Mike and I] talked a bunch and he had kind of planted the seed in my ear. I was talking to him about [my plans to record a new solo album], and he was like, ‘Well, if you need someone, I’m available.’ And it was, like, in my head, I’m, like, ‘I’m going to tell you about this.’
“I had written all the songs and we programmed the drums,” he continued. “And I was playing bass, and our engineer was playing bass, so we had these songs done. And Mike came in, learned everything, of course, added his touches and his taste. [He] did a wonderful and spectacular job. It was great fun to come together musically and do this together. It took about six days to do it. Again, he did a great job. The drums sound awesome. David recorded his stuff remotely, redid all the bass. And it’s mixed by Andy Snap — this is my first time working with Andy, and he did a terrific job mixing it up. He is currently in JUDAS PRIEST play guitar after Glenn [Tipton] couldn’t do it anymore. And it’s an amazing mixer with an amazing CV. He mixed ‘Firepower’the last JUDAS PRIESTand a whole bunch of other stuff – IMMOBILIZER [ENGAGE] and SWORN ENEMY and MACHINE HEAD, and it continues. He is incredible. So the album sounds good.”
Regarding why he chose to record his second solo album in 2020, Petrucci said, “Originally, before the whole pandemic hit, I planned to work on my solo album, because DREAM THEATER there were tours coming up, but there were, like, free month bits in the year. So I was, like, ‘If I don’t start it now, I never will.’ And then everything knocked and closed and everything was postponed, so I found myself with all this time on my hands. Basically, very soon after I got home [last DREAM THEATER] tour, I started working on my solo album – two months straight, five days a week. I did it in about three months.”
Asked how much material on “Terminal Velocity” is brand new and how much is left from the previous writing session, Petrucci said: “There are nine songs on the album, and I had played two of them live ‘G3’ before and to my [guitar] camp. One of them is a really old song from the early 90s when I was doing guitar lessons. In fact, it’s called ‘Gemini’and there is an extract on the “Rock Discipline” video I made in 95; there’s a bit of me playing that. So, for anyone who knows this song, it’s kind of an interesting little throwback, because I never had a chance to really record it properly. There was a song that I had written, I guess, around the same time as ‘Happy Song’ and “Glass-Eyed Zombies” on which I played ‘G3’, but I never did anything with it. Honestly, I kinda forgot I had it. It’s called “The Way Things Fall”. When I was looking at all my files and stuff, I was like, “I forgot that song,” and I got a full demo of it. I was, like, ‘That’s really cool.’ So I was able to record this for real. And then that leaves the remaining five songs, which are brand new. And I wrote and recorded them, and the other four, again, for about two months.”
Petrucci will embark on their first solo headlining tour in October. He will perform material from “Terminal Velocity”as well as songs from her widely acclaimed debut album, “Suspended Animation”. John will take his instrumental trio on the road live with portnoy and The street in a stage reunion that lasted 12 years.
portnoywho co-founded DREAM THEATER over 35 years ago, abruptly left the band in September 2010 while touring with AVENGED SEVENFOLD. It has since been replaced by Mike Mangini (ANNIHILATOR, EXTREME, JAMES LABRIE, STEVE VAY).
Since the departure in 2010 of portnoy, Petrucciwith the keyboardist Jordan Rüdesstook on much of the songwriting load during DREAM THEATERincluding the controversial 2016 concept double album, “The Amazing”2019 “The Distance in Time” and 2021 “A view from the top of the world”.
