Jesy Nelson addresses ‘black fishing’ controversy in latest clip
Jesy Nelson said she never intended to offend after she was charged with “black-fishing” in her latest music video.
The former Little Mix singer, 30, has been criticized by some social media users for appearing in Boyz’s video, her first solo track.
Nelson has been charged with moonlighting – the practice of a non-black person trying to appear black – but has denied using a fake tan.
During a live Instagram broadcast with superstar rapper Nicki Minaj, who featured on Boyz, Nelson said she had been to Antigua in the weeks leading up to the video’s filming, which explained her darker complexion.
The comments came after Nelson’s former bandmate Leigh-Anne Pinnock warned her against moonlighting.
During the livestream, Nelson said, âPersonally I mean my intention was never to offend people of color with this video and my song because like I said growing up like a young girl. girl, this is the music i listened to.
âThese are the videos that I watched and found the best. For me personally, the hip hop of the 90s / 2000s, R&B music was the best era in music.

Nelson said she was lucky to tan easily in the sun and told Minaj that Pinnock had previously commented on her propensity to sunbathe.
And she said her hair was naturally curly after complaints she changed her style in the Boyz clip.
She added, “I really didn’t think I was doing anything wrong, because I have naturally curly hair.”
Responding to Pinnock’s alleged comments on black-fishing, Nelson said: “It’s just difficult for me because I was in a group with two women of color for nine years and it was never approached to me until. ‘to the last clip I did with them. “
