Watch the new video for “Awaken and Allow” and “Geist” now, which was produced by Kai MacKnight by clicking here. Lay says of singles âAwaken and Allowâ is a prayer and a promise. A quiet moment to reflect on the transformation and what it means to me. California is my comfort zone and in this song I urge myself and everyone listening to step out of their comfort zone in order to push us to grow and evolve. We are all in a state of constant change and the way we can learn to move and follow that change completely elevates our experience with it. The most amazing thing we can do for ourselves is recognize where and how we stand in our own way and step aside. “Awake and allow” your greatness to emerge.
“Geist” is a testament to the power we all have within us. We are so much more amazing than we ourselves realize. With this video, I really wanted to thank some of the amazing people who make shows possible. We shot at Zebulon in Los Angeles; a place that has brought so much to the community here and I am so happy that they survived this uncertain time. There is so much going on behind the scenes to create the amazing memories we all have from live music and every part of it has taken a hit with the pandemic. With all that we have been through, it has been awe-inspiring to see the strength of the human spirit. Let us move forward with kindness and love towards ourselves and others. Let’s see the beauty and wonder of the life we ââlive and enjoy every moment. “

Geist feels like a window – or a mirror – to the possibilities of the self and beyond. Lay’s new album is tender intensity, spaceless and ethereal. It exists in the chasms of the present – a world of shadows, spiritual awakenings, deja vu, and past lives.
âSomething is sleeping in us,â Lay insists on the opening track, and that’s the philosophy that guides us throughout. A sinuous, golden and delicate thread of intuition that explores the unknown, the possibility. His title, Geist, the German word for spirit, is full of a presence from another world, the suggestion of another. The promise that you are never alone.
Lay recorded the vocals and guitar at Jarvis Tavinere of Woods’ studio, then sent the songs to multi-instrumentalists Ben Boye (Bonnie Prince Billy, Ty Segall) in Los Angeles and Devin Hoff (Sharon Van Etten, Cibo Matto) in New York ; trust their musical instincts and intuition. She then sent those recordings to Sofia Arreguin (Wand) and Aaron Otheim (Heatwarmer, Mega Bog) for additional touches, while Ty Segall contributed a guitar solo on “Shores”.
In general, Geist is both esoteric and accessible. There is the concise and clean cover of “Late Night” by Syd Barrett, while “Rare to Wake”, inspired by Dune, is existential and meditative, a looping circular guitar riff at the heart of it. “Awaken and Allow”, is an old feeling and predominantly a cappella, its melody channels its deep Irish roots, a moment of reflection, before a drop occurs – its intensity reflecting the anticipation and anxiety that accompanies the first step towards accepting the change for you.
“Time’s Arrow”, with its downhill chorus, was inspired by something a close friend said. Lay notes: âI wanted ‘Time’s Arrow’ to be that sweet reminder that we are on the right track and moving forward. There are drugs all the time, so don’t rush.
“Thread to Find”, which Lay wrote after walking into an old hotel in Switzerland and being struck by the impression that she had been there before, is a testament to the energy we leave behind and stumble upon. .
And the main song âGeistâ, a song about the power that dwells in all of us, is a love song to the possibility of being healed, an ode to fall into the arms of who you are becoming. It’s a glimpse into the parts of yourself that you haven’t come across yet. But you can, if you want.
